The Fire Precautions Act (FPA) and the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations (FPWR) are both now replaced by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) 2005. The RRFSO is now the primary piece of legislation dealing with fire. This places emphasis on fire prevention through fire risk assessments. This new legislation applies to most non-domestic premises, for example:

  • Factories and warehouses
  • Offices and shops
  • Pubs, clubs and restaurants
  • Hotels and hostels
  • Premises that provide care
  • Community halls
  • Schools
  • Tents and marquees
  • Open air public gatherings (Concerts, shows etc).

Premises not included are: offshore installations, ships, agricultural or forestry land, mines and boreholes.

The RRFSO 2005 is a move towards placing the emphasis on fire prevention through the implementation of information taken from fire risk assessments. Under the RRFSO 2005 most non-domestic buildings as listed above are required to have an up-to-date fire risk assessment.
